Golfer's Elbow

Golfers Elbow (medial epicondylitis) is an inflammatory condition which causes pain or irritation to the tendon on the inside of the elbow joint. Liverpool Orthotics provides custom made and ‘off the shelf’ supports for Golfer’s elbow. There are many supports available on the market and selecting the correct support is crucial to treating the issue effectively. Liverpool Orthotics can identify and supply the support that will provide optimal pain relief.

What causes Golfers' Elbow?

Golfer’s elbow is normally caused by overuse, over strain, trauma, age or repetitive movement (like playing golf).

What is the treatment for Golfer’s Elbow?

The primary treatment is to try to reduce the stress passing through the tendon with rest and ice. Finding the opportunity to rest an arm can be very difficult when living our busy lives. A well fitting Golfer’s elbow support can effectively reduce the stress on the tendon and allow you to continue to get on with life.

Physiotherapy can be helpful to reduce pain, to understand pain and to strengthen the muscles of the forearm. In severe cases of Golfer’s elbow the tendon may be injected with a steroid to reduce inflammation.

How does a Golfer’s Elbow support work?

A Golfer’s elbow support works by compressing the muscle to which the painful tendon attaches. By doing this, the size of muscle contraction is reduced, which prevents the muscle shortening and in turn reduces stress on the troublesome tendon.

How is a Golfer’s Elbow support worn?

A Golfer’s elbow support is normally worn on the main muscle bulk of the forearm. The support is fitted over the muscle which is causing the stress on the tendon in the elbow joint. It is important the support is fitted correctly to ensure it carries out the correct function.

When is a Golfer’s Elbow support worn?

It is worn during the day, particularly when active and removed at night or when resting the arm.

How can Liverpool Orthotics help with my Golfer’s Elbow?

The first step is to arrange a consultation with one of our experienced orthotists. The appointments can be carried out at home, school, work or one of our clinics. During this consultation the orthotist will assess your condition and discuss with you the most suitable treatment plan for you.

If a Golfer’s elbow support is appropriate for you, then measurements can be taken and a support ordered. A suitable fitting appointment will be arranged at a time that suits you.
