Neuroma

A neuroma is a condition where a growth develops on a nerve in the forefore foot. This growth becomes impinged between two of the long bones (metatarsals) and can cause significant pain and discomfort.

What causes a neuroma?

There are a number of factors that can cause a neuroma to develop, including;

  • Flat foot (pes planus)
  • High arch foot (pes planus)
  • Tight footwear
  • High heeled footwear
  • Trauma
  • Increased load on foot
  • Genetics (runs in families)

What are the common symptoms of a neuroma?

A neuroma causes pain in the ball or the toes of the foot. A neuroma can affect one or both feet. The pains can be unpredictable and offered described as;

  • Pins and needles
  • Sharp stabbing pains
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Burning sensation

A ‘squeeze test’ is a simple way to identify a possible neuroma. In a non weight bearing position simply squeeze the bones of the forefoot together. If this increases pain this may be an indication that further scans and investigation is required.

What are the treatments for a neuroma?

Footwear - Wide fitting footwear that does not compress the forefoot will relieve stress on the neuroma. Footwear that has good shock absorption can also help to relieve symptoms. Avoiding high heels will also prevent impingement of the neuroma.

Insoles - Insoles can be a very effective way to relieve neuroma symptoms. A strategically placed dome pad is incorporated onto the insole under the forefoot, to separate the bones and relieve stress on the neuroma.

Surgery - Surgery is normally considered as a last restore once all other treatment options have unsuccessfully been exhausted. Liverpool Orthotics can provide all non surgical treatments options.

Can a neuroma ever get better?

Unfortunately once a neuroma develops it does not go away. Careful management of a neuroma can often mean that the symptoms can completely subside.

How can Liverpool Orthotics help with the treatment of a neuroma?

Liverpool Orthotics provides a comprehensive orthotic assessment to diagnose a neuroma and to identify the underlying cause. During the assessment, one of our experienced orthotists will take a medical history, carry out a physical examination and understand your goals of treatment. The assessment will involve a full biomechanical assessment including range of movement tests and muscle power tests of all joints.

Once the cause has been identified the orthotist will be able to advise on the most suitable treatment option. Liverpool orthotics can provide;

Custom footwear - We provide a range of wide and deep fitting footwear for every occasion. Wide and deep footwear can reduce pitching from ill fitting or narrow footwear and help to relieve stress placed on the neuroma.

Custom insoles - when it comes to the treatment of a neuroma the placement of the dome pad that is incorporated into the insole under the forefoot is crucial to successful relief of symptoms.

At Liverpool Orthotics we take scans, impressions and measures of the foot to ensure an insole is manufactured to an exact specification to suit each individual.
