Tennis Elbow

Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) is an inflammatory condition which causes pain or irritation to the tendon on the outside of the elbow joint. Liverpool Orthotics provide custom made and ‘off the shelf’ tennis elbow supports to help relieve tennis elbow pain. There are many supports available on the market and selecting the correct support is crucial to treating the issue effectively. Our experienced orthotist’s will ensure you are provided the best support for your condition.

What causes tennis elbow?

Tennis elbow is normally caused by overuse, over strain, trauma, age or repetitive movement (like playing tennis).

What is the treatment?

The primary treatment is to try to reduce the stress passing through the tendon with rest and ice. Finding the opportunity to rest an arm can be very difficult when living our busy day to day lives. To help reduce the stress on the tendon and allow you to continue to get on with life, a well fitted tennis elbow support can be very effective.

Physiotherapy can be helpful to reduce pain, to understand pain and to strengthen the muscles of the forearm. In severe cases of tennis elbow the tendon may be injected with a steroid to reduce inflammation.

How does a Tennis Elbow support work?

A tennis elbow support works by compressing the muscle (Extensor Carpi Radialis Brevis muscle) which the painful tendon attaches. By doing this it reduces the size of muscle contraction, which reduces the muscle shortening and in turn reduces tendon stress.

How is a Tennis Elbow support worn?

A tennis elbow support is normally worn on the main muscle bulk of the forearm. The support is fitted over the muscle which is causing the stress on the tendon in the elbow joint.

When is a Tennis Elbow support worn?

It is worn during the day when active and removed at night or when resting the arm.

How can Liverpool Orthotics help with my Tennis Elbow?

The first step is to arrange a consultation with us at either one of our clinics or at your home. At this consultation the orthotist will assess your condition and discuss with you the most suitable treatment plan for you.

If a tennis elbow support is appropriate for you, then measurements can be taken and a support ordered. A suitable fitting appointment will be arranged at a time that suits you.
