Abdominal Hernia Supports

Liverpool Orthotics provides a range of 'off the shelf' and custom made abdominal hernia supports. The abdomen is also known as the belly, tummy or midriff. Abdominal hernias occur due to a weakness in the abdominal muscle wall. Abdominal hernias can be painful, unsightly and can interfere with digestion.

In some cases an abdominal hernia cannot be surgically repaired so an abdominal support can be used to reduce pain and prevent the hernia from increasing in size. In the case of larger hernias the abdominal support can be helpful in reducing the hernia so it is less visible through clothing.

What can cause an abdominal hernia?

  • Surgery to the abdomen (incisional hernia)
  • During or after pregnancy (Umbilical hernia)
  • Injury to the abdominal muscles (muscle rupture or tear)
  • Cancer treatments
  • Due to stoma (parastomal hernia)
  • Due to a feeding peg

Liverpool orthotics can provide abdominal hernia support to help with any of the above causes.

What is an abdominal support made of?

An abdominal support can be made from a number of materials depending on the size of the hernia or how easy it is to reduce back into the abdominal cavity. Smaller and more easily reducible hernias are normally treated with elasticated support.

Larger, heavier hernias, which are more difficult to reduce or cannot be reduced, normally require a custom made device. These are manufactured using a mixture of Coutil Fabric, elastic tab and velcro.

At which point should I decide to wear an abdominal support?

If you have an abdominal hernia which is not suitable for surgical repair then you should be considered for a hernia support. The abdominal wall does not heal and the weakness will not improve. As stress from a hernia builds on the weak area of the abdominal wall the hernia has the potential to become larger over time.

It is essential when considering a hernia support to establish if the hernia is reducible. If an hernia support is fitted onto a hernia that is non reducible this can strangulate the hernia and can have serious health consequences. .

Do I need to wear my hernia support all the time?

For most people, the answer to this question is no. Most people will mainly wear the support when doing something that may put more stress on the hernia i.e gardening or walking a long distance. Some people do find great comfort and reduction in pain from wearing the support so choose to wear the support more frequently. It is not advised to wear an abdominal support at night.

What is the process to having a corset made?

The first step is to book a clinical or home assessment with one of our experienced orthotists who will assess your hernia. Once the best course of treatment has been established, then measurements and scans of your abdominal region will be taken. A suitable fitting appointment will then be rearranged. For larger hernias the orthotist may advise a mid fitting appointment to ensure a perfect fit.
