What type of ankle braces are available?

There is a vast selection of ankle supports on the market today that can offer sufficient support and comfort. Ankle braces commonly secure onto the ankle using velcro or lace. 'Off the shelf' ankle supports are traditionally made of softer outer material with reinforcement panels either side of the ankle.

A custom made ankle support should be considered if an individual has very painful symptoms, is not seeing results from an 'off the shelf' product or has a certain amount of bony deformity that requires accommodating.

A custom ankle brace can be made of plastic, material, neoprene, silicon or leather. Often they are made of a combination of materials to achieve the best level of comfort and support.

Will the ankle brace fit inside my commercial footwear?

Most ankle braces will fit inside normal footwear however some ankle braces are more discreet than others. One of our experienced orthotist's will be able to advise you which ankle support solution is the most appropriate and discreet option for your issue.

What does an assessment for an ankle support involve?

There are three appointments required to provide an Ankle Support.

  1. Consultation/ Measuring (including casting or scanning)
  2. Fitting
  3. Review (normally after 3 months)

The initial consultation can be at one of our clinics or your home. It will involve an assessment with the orthotist who will take your medical history and establish your goals of treatment. The orthotist will observe you walking plus carry out a number of clinical tests including muscle power tests and range of movement tests. The orthotist will then discuss the best ankle brace option for you and may take measurements, casts and/ or scans of your ankle. The ankle support will be ordered and a suitable fitting appointment arranged.

At the fitting the orthotist will explain how to fit the device and when to wear it. A complimentary review appointment will be made after a certain period of time to ensure that the ankle support is having the desired effect.
