Bespoke Protective Footwear

Liverpool Orthotics specialises in the provision of made to measure safety footwear that is suitable for use in an industrial setting. Our protective footwear is manufactured to British standard BS EN 20 345-1, with European CE marking control. Our bespoke protective footwear is designed to look like retail safety footwear.

Who could benefit from wearing bespoke or adapted safety footwear?

It is common for individuals who are required to wear safety footwear at work to spend long periods of the day on their feet. It is therefore crucial to have comfortable safety footwear to help maintain focus and avoid developing painful feet.

At Liverpool Orthotics, we are able to provide made to measure safety footwear that can accommodate any foot shape that is difficult to fit into regular safety footwear. Our safety footwear can be made to accommodate any foot deformities, orthotic insoles or to provide greater support to the foot or ankle.

Bespoke footwear can be beneficial to individuals who experience difficulties related to:

  • Neuropathy (including diabetic)
  • Pes cavus (high arched foot)
  • Pes planus (collapsed arch/ flat foot)
  • Hammer toes
  • Bunions
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Any foot deformity, following trauma or as a result of disease.

What adaptations and accommodations can be made?

Liverpool Orthotics can accommodate any foot shape. Specific adaptations that we can make include:

  • Deepened toe box, to provide relief for hammer toes or rheumatoid conditions
  • Increased width at the forefoot or rearfoot sections to accommodate foot shape
  • Relief over the inside of the big toe (hallux) joint to accommodate bunions (hallux valgus)
  • Lowered tab points, to allow for larger opening at the front of the shoe and make it easier to get the foot into the shoe
  • Medial (inside) and lateral (outside) stiffeners, providing greater support on the desired side of the foot
  • Heel raises and cups to allow for improved positioning and support of the foot.
  • Extra padding on any area of the foot that causes discomfort.

What is the process for a patient to receive bespoke protective footwear?

An initial assessment with one of our orthotists will take place where your feet will be examined and options for footwear discussed with you. It is likely that your orthotist will also conduct a gait assessment during this appointment, to gain a more holistic view of how your body works as a unit. Measurements for footwear will be taken, and a cast if necessary. The assessment will typically take around 30 minutes.

Following the assessment and measuring/casting, your footwear will be manufactured and two suitable fitting appointments made. We always have a mid fitting with our safety footwear to ensure optimal fit and comfort.
