How do compression stockings work?

Compression stockings are made from an elasticated fabric material and are different lengths, sizes and grades of compression. The compressive force applied to the body effectively reduces the diameter of the veins and increases venous blood flow velocity and valve effectiveness. Compression stockings are tightest at the ankles and gradually become less constrictive toward the knees and thighs.
