Compression stockings

Compression stockings, also known as medical stockings or compression hosiery, provide compressive support to the lower limbs and upper limbs. Liverpool orthotics supply an extensive range of made to measure and 'off the shelf' compression supports to help in the treatment of many conditions.

Compression stockings are similar to flight socks, however as they are designed for medical purposes and are of medical grade quality. They are often worn for a large portion of the day so they are designed and measured to fit the body perfectly. +

What conditions are compression stockings used to treat?

Compression stockings are useful in the treatment of a range of conditions including:

  • Varicose veins (including during pregnancy)
  • Oedema (swelling)
  • Venous eczema
  • Lipodermatosclerosis
  • Lymphoedema
  • Phlebitis
  • Healed venous leg ulcers (for treatment and prevention)
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Post-thrombotic syndrome
  • Superficial thrombophlebitis
  • Elephaisis
  • Post surgery/ Post pregnancy

How do compression stockings work?

Compression stockings are made from an elasticated fabric material and are different lengths, sizes and grades of compression. The compressive force applied to the body effectively reduces the diameter of the veins and increases venous blood flow velocity and valve effectiveness. Compression stockings are tightest at the ankles and gradually become less constrictive toward the knees and thighs. To ensure a stocking works effectively, it is crucial to establish the necessary grade of compression. Our experienced orthotist will be able to advise you on the most suitable grade compression for any condition.

How are Compression stockings worn?

Compression stockings can be worn for long term or short term use, on one or both legs depending on the condition. If compression stockings have been prescribed for a condition that affects your circulation, you may need to wear them for several years or, in some cases, the rest of your life. In most cases stockings are normally worn during the day and removed at night.

Are there any aids available to help me fit the stocking on?

Liverpool orthotics are aware that fitting a tight compression stocking can be a challenge even for the most healthy of individuals. We can provide a range of aids to help the fitting process of the stocking.

Do compression stocking come in different colours and patterns?

At Liverpool orthotics we have access to every colour, style and pattern available on the market. Whether you want your compressions stocking to look like commercial tights, be the same shade as your skin tone or to stand out from the crowd. We also have a number of ways to hold the stockings in place and to stop them slipping down, to ensure your stocking is comfortable and effective.

What is the process to receiving a suitable compression stocking?

First, contact us to arrange a consultation with one of our experienced orthotist's. The orthotist will establish if a compression stocking is suitable and which type of stocking would be most effective. A series of measurements will then be taken to and a suitable stocking manufactured. A fitting appointment will be arranged to show you how to fit the stocking, to check the function and ensure the stocking is comfortable.
