Functional Electrical Stimulation (F.E.S.)

Functional electrical stimulation is a well established and safe treatment which works by passing a small electrical current through the skin to stimulate a weak or paralysed muscle. Liverpool orthotics provide FES treatment to help in the rehabilitation of many conditions that cause muscle weakness .

What conditions can FES be used to treat?

FES can be used to treat any condition that affects the upper motor neurons causing muscle weakness or spasticity. These conditions include;

  • Stroke
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Brain Injuries
  • Spastic paraparesis
  • Drop foot

How does Functional Electrical Stimulation work?

When the brain wants a muscle to contract (move) it normally sends an electrical signal down a pathway from the brain, to the spinal cord and then down the nerves to the muscle. When a medical condition interferes with the smooth running of this pathway a muscle is then unable to contract.

Functional electrical stimulation works by replicating this electrical signal by directly applying a safe level of electrical current through the skin to stimulate the nerves in the weak or paralysied muscle. The electrical current is passed through the skin using a medical grade electrode pad that is located over the weak muscle bulk with a simple strap to the shin area. A small battery pack clipped onto the waistband of the trousers.

How does FES work in the treatment of drop foot?

Drop foot, also known as foot drop, is a term used to describe a weakness in the muscles that act to lift the foot up (towards the shin) from the ankle joint. This weakness often causes trips and falls as the foot is not lifted out of the way when the leg is passing through.

Functional electrical stimulation can be used to stimulate the weak muscle that is responsible for lifting the foot up preventing trips, falls and improving mobility. The technology ensures that the FES will only activate when the foot is lifted off the ground.

What other ways can Functional Electrical Stimulation be used?

FES treatment can also be used to aid individuals who have a weakness in the upper limbs. FES can be worn during completing a functional activity or it can be used to strengthen the muscles while you rest. Over time this can enable a greater independence and enable individuals to carry everyday tasks such as drinking from a cup or brushing their hair.

What types of Functional Electrical stimulation devices are there?

At Liverpool orthotics our experienced orthotist's will carry out an in depth neurological assessment to determine if you are appropriate to try FES. There are several types of FES available from different companies. We will be able to help you to decide which is the most useful FES treatment for you.

What does an assessment for FES with Liverpool orthotics involve?

The first consultation will involve a 90 minute suitability trial of an FES device. If the orthotist deems that you are an appropriate candidate for FES treatment then the device will be set up for a trial during the initial appointment. This trial will give the orthotist and the individual the opportunity to observe the benefits of FES.

If the FES is deemed a success during the appointment then the FES can be offered for a one month home trail. Alternatively, measurements can be taken and an FES device ordered on the same day.
