Head Protection

Head protection, also known as protective helmets can be used for individuals that may have sustained a head injury, at risk of a head injury or for post surgical protection. Liverpool orthotics provide an extensive range of custom made and 'off the shelf' Head protection.

What materials are used to provide Head protection?

Protective helmets can be made of a number of materials such as, thermoplastics, carbon fibre, leather, foam, padding and 3D printed materials. Protective helmets can be rigid, soft or a combination. They normally secure onto the head with a strap under the chin but can also have additional adjustment at the back of the head. Custom made helmets give the orthotist the freedom to use any materials to ensure a greater level of protection and comfort.

We can provide head protection to look like cycling helmets, rugby helmets or beanie hats.

When should Head protection be considered?

To prevent a head injury - Head protection can be used when an individual is at risk of a head injury. These are often a result of:

  • Epilepsy
  • Drop fits and seizures
  • Poor balance
  • Self harming
  • Sensory issues

Post injury protection - A helmet may be usual for an individual who has sustained an injury to the head and requires ongoing protection, cushioning or offloading to the offending area.

Post surgery protection - Many surgical procedures to the skull require head protection such as a craniotomy (removal of section of skull) and wound protection.

Unusual head shape - Anyone with an non uniform or unusual shaped head may not fit into commercial or 'off the shelf' protective headwear. In this situation Liverpool orthotics can make a custom made device from taking a scan of the head. We can make helmets for any sports or activities.

What does an assessment for Head protection normally involve?

The first step is to call us to arrange an initial consultation at one of our clinics or to organise a home consultation. Once arranged, one of our experienced orthotists will examine the head, understand the medical and social history and advise on the best type of protective headwear.

A series of measures and a scan will be taken of the head and then a suitable fitting appointment will be arranged. In cases of complex head shapes a mid fitting of the custom helmet may also be required.
