Hernia Supports

Hernias are caused by an internal organ pushing through a weakness in the abdominal muscle wall and protruding under the skin. They are most commonly found in the abdominal region, groin or scrotum. Hernias can be unsightly, painful and have the potential to become larger if left untreated. Liverpool orthotics provide a range of custom made and 'off the shelf' supports for hernias of any size or shape.

What causes a hernia?

There can be many factors that cause a hernia, the most commonly associated are;

  • Surgical procedure
  • Age
  • Truma
  • Sporting injury
  • Post cancer treatment
  • Abdominal injury
  • Lifting a heavy weight

What type of hernia are there?

Abdominal hernia - Located anywhere on the abdomen (tummy)

Umbilical hernia - This type of hernia commonly appears after giving birth, located on or close to the belly button.

Incisional hernia - A hernia that is caused by an operation.

Parastomal hernia - A hernia caused by the hole created for a colostomy or ileostomy appliance.

Inguinal hernia - A hernia present in one or both groins and is the most common type of hernia for males.

Scrotal hernia - A hernia which pushes down into the scrotal sack.

Femoral hernia - A hernia located at the top of the thigh close to the groin, most commonly for females.

Multiple hernia - It is possible to have more than one hernia listed above.

What type of support are available?

There are many 'off the shelf' and custom products available and selecting the most suitable support is crucial to successfully supporting and protecting a hernia site.

Abdominal corset

An abdominal corset is made from a combination of courtil cotton, elastic and velcro straps. Additional areas on reinforcement can be customly placed over the hernia for additional support. Custom abdominal supports can be made for larger hernias. Specific cut outs can be made in the support to allow for a colostomy bag.

Elasticated binder

An elasticated binder is made from flexible elasticated material that is secured around the abdomen. This can be a simple but effective solution for supporting smaller abdominal hernias. Specific cut outs can be made in the elastic material to allow for a colostomy bag or stoma.

Truss

A truss hernia support is most commonly used to support inguinal hernias. There are a number of variations of truss supports but the most common is made from an elasticated belt with pads placed over the hernia to prevent it from pushing out.

Scrotal

A scrotal support has a material bag that encases the scrotum, a hole for the penis and an elasticated belt. The bag section of this truss can vary in size depending on the size of the scrotal hernia.

How do I know which abdominal support is most suitable?

It is crucial to ensure that a hernia is treated with the correct support. An inappropriate or poorly fitting hernia support could potentially strangulate a hernia and cut of the blood supply to vital organs.

At Liverpool Orthotics, our experienced team of orthotist's will ensure you are provided the most appropriate, comfortable and effective hernia support. We have access to every available hernia support on the market and can also provide custom made abdominal supports to support hernias of any shape and size.

What is the process?

The first step is to book an initial consultation with one of our orthotist's at home or one of our clinics. At this consultation the orthotist will look at the henia and establish which hernia support would be most suitable. The orthotist will take into account your lifestyle, activity level, pain, and goals.

Measurements or a scan will be taken and from this an appropriate hernia support manufactured. A suitable fitting appointment will then be arranged. Some of our more complex corsets will require a mid fitting stage to ensure a perfect fit.
