Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis (KAFO)

A knee ankle foot orthosis, also known as a KAFO, provides stability, support or correction to the knee, ankle and foot joints. Liverpool Orthotics provides a comprehensive range of KAFO's for every condition, from the very latest technology to the more traditional style.

What conditions can a KAFO be used to treat?

KAFO's can be used to treat a range of conditions that require support to the whole lower limb, conditions such as;

  • Polio
  • Stroke
  • Paralysis
  • Spinal injury
  • Brain Injury
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Knee deformities (knock/ bow knees)
  • Knee hyperextension (knee flexing backwards)

What is the function of a Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis?

  • Control to joint instability
  • Prevent excessive joint motion
  • Improve joint alignment
  • Reduce joint pain

What are the different types of KAFO's available?

Thermoplastic KAFO's

Thermoplastic is a lightweight and durable substance that offers good support and stability.

Thermoplastic KAFO's are made in two parts. The foot and ankle section (AFO) and a thigh section. The two parts are normally connected by single or double metal side members and the KAFO secured to the leg using leather straps.

Carbon fibre KAFO

Carbon fibre is a very lightweight and strong substance which can be made very thin reducing weight and improving cosmesis. Carbon fibre KAFO's easily fit under clothing however the carbon material looks very sleek so some choose to leave the KAFO on show!

Stance control KAFO

Stance control KAFO's have a specialist knee joint which locks when the foot is planted on the ground (stance phase) and unlock when the leg is swinging through (swing phase). This type of KAFO allows for a much smoother gait pattern when compared to a locked knee KAFO. Due to the unlocking nature of the knee joint many of these KAFO's have anti stumble technology to prevent falls.

Traditional KAFO

Traditional KAFO's are made from a combination of leather and metal. They are often viewed as an old fashioned type of support however they are crucial in the effective treatment of many lower limb conditions. These callipers are particularly useful for individuals who suffer from oedema (swelling), poor skin condition or diabetes.

What KAFO knee joints are available?

KAFO knee joints are integrated into the KAFO to align with the body's natural knee joint. There are different knee joints that serve different purposes. Liverpool orthotics are able to consider every KAFO knee joint available to ensure the best treatment outcome.

What is the process to receiving a KAFO?

The first step is to contact us to arrange an initial consultation at one of our clinics or at your home. At this consultation the orthotist will take a relevant medical, social history and understand your goals. A full physical assessment including muscle power tests, joint range of movement tests and observations of your walking (where appropriate) will establish which KAFO is the most suitable for you and your circumstances.

Measurements, scans and casts will then be taken of your leg. Suitable fitting appointments will then be made where the orthotist will show you how to fit and care for your KAFO. For more complex KAFO's an additional mid fitting (check fit) appointment will be required. We provide a complimentary review appointment after an agreed time to ensure you have reached your goals.
