Knee bracing

Knee braces can be used to aid rehabilitation following injury or surgery. They can also be used to help prevent injury from occurring or to provide support to the joint to alleviate symptoms of conditions such as arthritis.

What conditions can a knee brace help with?

There are a number of different situations where a knee brace can benefit an individual, these might include:

  • ACL Rupture
  • PCL Rupture
  • Cartilage Damage
  • MCL Damage
  • Muscle weakness
  • Rehabilitation following injury
  • Knee fractures
  • Injury prevention (training for athletics or sports)
  • Pain relief for progressive conditions such as osteoarthritis.

What are the different types of Knee braces?

Knee braces may be worn for a number of reasons, and as a result there are different types of brace to suit different purposes. Liverpool Orthotics provide braces made from a range of materials and suitable for a range of purposes.

Rehabilitation braces

These braces are worn following injury or surgery, and can be designed to hold the knee joint in a certain position or to limit movement. This can help to facilitate healing and recovery.

Offloader knee braces

Offloader knee braces are designed to reduce pressure on any area of worn knee cartilage. This can significantly reduce knee pain, increase mobility and slow the progression of debilitating conditions such as osteoarthritis.

Ligament knee braces

A ligament brace provides specific support to a damaged ligament in the knee. It only take one ligament to be compromised in the knee for it to become unstable and painful. The brace compensates for the loss of function to a ligament such as the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or the Collateral ligaments (MCL, LCL).

Combined stability knee brace

A combined stability brace aims to compensate for more than one impaired function of an affected knee. It is common in knee injuries that more than one ligament may be damaged and there could also be cartilage damage or arthritis. In these circumstances a combined stability knee brace would be the most effective solution.

Knee braces to prevent injury

Some knee braces are worn to prevent the occurrence of injury to the knee joint or to help with the recovery of any injury. Braces worn for this purpose are used commonly by athletes during training or individuals whilst undertaking demanding physical activities such as skiing and wakeboarding. Liverpool Orthotics can supply light weight and low profile braces to ensure that they do not compromise sporting performance.

Patella (knee cap) stabilising knee bracing

Patella stability braces work to stablise the patella (knee cap) while retaining complete knee function. These braces may be helpful for individuals who suffer from frequent knee dislocations or who have arthritic changes to the cartilage of the knee cap.

What is the process to receiving a knee brace?

The first step is to book a clinical or home assessment with one of our experienced orthotists. The orthotist will carry out a full physical examination to establish the most suitable knee bracing solution for your issue. Measurements, scans or casts of the offending knee will be taken and a brace ordered. A suitable fitting appointment will then be arranged where the orthotist will show you how to fit the knee brace correctly, when to wear it and who to care for the brace. Once the knee brace has been supplied a complimentary review appointment can be arranged.
