Shoe Raises

At Liverpool Orthotics, we can assess your leg length discrepancy and provide a shoe raise to even out the length or your legs. A leg length discrepancy can be caused for many reasons but early identification and treatment can be essential to prevent compensatory movements and posture.

What may cause a leg length discrepancy?

There are many issues and conditions that can cause a different in leg length, including;

  • Total Hip Replacement
  • Total Knee Replacement
  • Arthritis of hip/ knee/ ankle
  • Lower limb fractures
  • Perthes disease
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Reconstructive lower limb surgery
  • Idiopathic (unknown)

How might a shoe raise help me?

Raising a shoe to even out the leg length length discrepancy can have a number of health benefits, including:

  • Reduction in lower back pain
  • Prevention of lower back pain
  • Reduces stress on other joints
  • Improved balance
  • Improve gait (walking)
  • Improved posture

How is the raise fitted to my shoe?

Once your orthotist has determined the raise height required, the selected shoe will need to be sent away to our manufacturer. The manufacturer will then carefully splice the sole of the shoe in half and discretely sandwich a piece of material into the sole unit of the shoe. The original sole unit will then be stuck back on. Liverpool orthotics always colour match the raise to the sole unit colour in order to ensure the raise as discreet as possible.

Will the raise fit inside my footwear?

If a leg length difference is only small then potentially a raise could be fitted inside the footwear. This depends on a number of variables, including, footwear preference, footwear depth and foot type (high or low arch). This option can be confirmed at your assessment.

What type of footwear can Liverpool orthotics raise?

Liverpool Orthotist can raise almost any footwear. As a rule the thicker the sole unit the more successful the raise will likely be. Footwear that can be raised, includes;

  • Trainers
  • Casual shoes
  • Dress shoes
  • Boots
  • Indoor shoes
  • Slippers
  • Safety boots
  • Sports footwear
  • Fashion footwear

If you are unsure simply contact us, or email us a picture of the footwear in question and we will be happy to advise if the footwear is suitable.

What is the process to having a shoe raised?

One of our experienced orthotist will carry out a full assessment including, range of movement tests, muscle power tests and medical history. The orthotist will then take measurements to establish the exact shortening of your leg and advise you on what is the best solution. We advise you bring a range of your current footwear with you to your assessment.

If you are aware of the height of the raise required then simply arrange a suitable time to drop the footwear into one of our clinics.
