Silicon AFO (SAFO)

A silicon AFO also known as a SAFO is a custom made, cosmetic and comfortable way to treat a drop foot. Drop foot is a broad term used to describe a muscle weakness in lifting the foot upwards (towards the shin) from the ankle when walking. A drop foot can cause trip and falls plus issues with balance.

What conditions can a SAFO be used to treat?

A SAFO can be used to treat any condition that results in a drop foot for both adults and children. These conditions include:

  • Nerve Impingement
  • Nerve damage
  • Muscle wasting
  • Muscle weakness
  • Charcot Marie Tooth
  • Cancer (tumours)
  • Stroke
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Motor Neurone Disease (MND)
  • Cerebral Palsy

What are the advantages of a SAFO?

  • Silicon is a very comfortable and forgiving material reducing rubs and discomfort.
  • A SAFO can be made to look very life-like. Silicon is a similar texture to skin, it is not bulky and the colour of the silicon can be closely matched to the individual's skin tone. There are 7 skin tones available. There are also some interesting patterns, bright colours and designs for those who want to stand out from the crowd.

How is a SAFO worn?

A SAFO is worn directly against the skin and shoes and socks can be worn over the top of the device. The device is very sleek and not bulky so will easily fit inside commerical footwear.

Would a SAFO be suitable for sports?

There are SAFO's that are specifically designed for sporting activities. The SAFO can be customised with additional support depending on the sporting activity.

When is a SAFO not suitable?

Unfortunately a SAFO is not suitable for everyone. There are multiple reasons for this including:

  • Swelling
  • Poor skin condition
  • History of ulceration
  • Very hot climates
  • High levels of increased muscle tone
  • Poor circulation
  • History of deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

If you are unsure if you are suitable for a SAFO, one of our experienced orthotists will be able to confirm this at a consultation. If a SAFO is deemed unsuitable the orthotist will be able to device you on an alternative appropriate solution for your drop foot and condition.

Liverpool orthotics have access to every available custom made and 'off the shelf' foot drop device on the market, so we can advise you on the most appropriate solution for you.

What is the process to having a SAFO made?

The first step is to arrange a consultation with one of our orthotists. Our orthotist will carry out a full assessment of your drop foot, including taking a full medical history and establishing your goals of treatment. The assessment will include a range of movement tests, muscle power tests and observations of your walking.

A series of precise measurements and a cast will be taken. The colour of the SAFO will be agreed using a colour swatches. A suitable fitting appointment will then be made to supply to SAFO.
