Turbomed

A Turbomed brace is a dynamic drop foot solution for both adults and children. Drop foot is the inability to lift the foot upwards (towards the shin) at the ankle joint when walking or running. Drop foot can be debilitating and can cause trips, falls, poor balance and compensatory walking patterns.

What conditions can a Turbomed be used to treat?

A Turbomed can be used to treat a number of conditions that cause a drop foot, including;

  • Nerve impingement
  • Nerve damage
  • Muscle weakness
  • Stroke
  • Brain injury
  • Cerebral Palsy (CP)
  • Diabetes (neuropathy)
  • Cancer treatment
  • Motor neurone disease (MND)
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Charcot Marie Tooth (CMT)
  • Trauma

How does a turbomed work?

The Turbomed is secured to footwear with a plastic attachment that is secured into the laces. The turbomed fits externally on the outside of the footwear and has a spring loaded stem that runs externally (away from the skin), up the back for the leg and is held onto the leg with a soft strap around the calf.

This spring loaded stem effectively replaces the weak muscle, preventing the foot from dropping when walking. This ultimately allows for a much safer and more natural walking style.

What are the advantages over other drop foot devices?

There are many drop foot orthotic solutions but some of the advantages of the Turbomed are;

  • Lightweight
  • Comfortable
  • Fits externally (doesn't rub)
  • Very durable
  • Gives active lift of the foot
  • Can easily be swapped from shoe to shoe
  • Provides some stability to the ankle
  • No skin
  • Good for sports
  • No constriction of blood flow

Is it possible to trial a Turbomed?

At Liverpool Orthotics, all our clinics have Turbomed trial kits available for adults and children. The trial will take place with one of our experienced orthotists. The orthotist will fit the Turbomed to your footwear and obverse your walking. Please bring a range of your footwear and running type trainers to the trial.

Liverpool Orthotics provides every 'off the shelf' and custom made drop foot orthosis solutions on the market. If there is a more suitable orthotic device than the Turbomed we will be able to discuss this at the trial. Our aim is to ensure you receive the most suitable device for your condition, lifestyle and goals.

What happens next?

If the Turbomed is appropriate for you the orthotist will take measurements of your leg and will order a custom Turbomed for you. A suitable fitting appointment will then be made. Liverpool Orthotics provide a complimentary review to ensure the treatment is effective.
